If the load is not continuous and is much shorter than the thermal time constant (the time taken to reach steady on-load temperature, which can be several hours), a smaller transformer can often be specified.
The following formula is helpful in calculating the rating needed.
Where: Power Nom. = Nominal transformer rating
Power Load = Actual power in the load
t on = Load on time
t tot = Total cycle time
